Ultimate Playlist to Pump You Up During Inventory5 songs to get you and your staff through the most tedious tasks.
Every job is a mix of things we love (positive customer interaction, putting out a superior product, delivering a great service) and things we dread (inventory, restocking, expense reports). To help your team get through long hours of tedious chores, create a power playlist that will energize your staff.
Studies show music can increase productivity in the face of repetitive work, so don’t hesitate to crank the tunes.
Here are a few songs to get you started.
“Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor
“It’s the eye of the tiger / It’s the thrill of the fight / Rising up to the challenge of our rival. . .” Before you start inventory or any tedious task, excite your team by playing “Eye of the Tiger.” They’ll feel like Rocky Balboa, but instead of training to fight in the ring, they’ll be building determination to power through your to-do list.
“We Can Make The World Stop” by The Glitch Mob
Managing inventory at a small store is difficult enough, so when Jason Bauman served as an assistant manager at a Walmart Supercenter, he used this beat-pounding, lyricless track from electronic music group The Glitch Mob to generate a supreme level of concentration. “It kept me moving without distracting me with the temptation to sing it out loud,” he said. Electronic music without a singer will get your staff into the groove.
“The Final Countdown” by Europe
While Bauman avoided lyrics on inventory day, he played the ultimate pump-up anthem, “The Final Countdown,” on repeat to turbocharge his staff the night before. “This is an incredible way to motivate your staff to get a task done, if only to get you to hit the stop button,” he said. Consider playing it during the last task of the day to encourage your staff to push through.
“Hello” by Adele
As CEO of Wild Texas Soaps, Darian Chavez helps her staff power through hours of soap making with the help of Adele. “Soap making sometimes requires some extra oomph to get the day going,” she said. “To pump me up, I play the latest Adele soundtrack. I love everything Adele and I especially love to sing along — much to the chagrin of my employees.”
‘Hello,’ of course, it a staff favorite, but we also love ‘When We Were Young,’ ‘Set Fire to the Rain’ and ‘Rumour Has It.’ We’ve really bonded as a unit at Wild Texas Soaps and music keeps the fun alive.” The lyrics “Hello from the other side” will remind your staff that no matter how tedious their current task is, they will make it through — to the other side.
“Take the Money and Run” by The Steve Miller Band
Sure, there’s more to a career than the salary, but sometimes that cold, hard cash is the only thing that drives workers to accomplish chores they may not love. Deborah Sweeney, CEO of MyCorporation, doesn’t hesitate to remind her staff of the reward for their hard work by playing this 1976 pay-day hit.
“We like to hand out paychecks while playing different songs about money,” she said. “It’s silly and keeps things light on pay day. Some people dance and sing along (mostly me). It’s always a fun time.”
